In 2021, the City of Helsinki had nearly 1,300 outdoor fitness devices available to residents across the city. IoT monitoring provides usage data to support investment decisions, maintenance planning, and user services.

What Is Tracked?

  • Equipment usage frequency and duration
  • Visitor numbers by area and time of day
  • Equipment utilization rate (active use vs. idle)
  • Anomalies — e.g., equipment not behaving as expected

Benefits for the City

Data-Driven Investment Decisions

Knowing which equipment is most popular and where utilization is low allows investments to be targeted correctly. No more guessing — decisions are based on real usage data.

Optimized Maintenance Planning

Maintenance intervals can be set based on actual usage rather than a calendar schedule. Most-used equipment gets serviced more frequently, less-used equipment less often — cost savings without reducing service quality.

Better User Experience

The city can publish real-time utilization data for popular areas, allowing residents to time their visits to less crowded periods.

How It Works

An IoT sensor attaches to the outdoor fitness device. The sensor detects usage through vibration and acceleration. Data is transmitted via the LoRaWAN network to the cloud, where it's available in a dashboard.

Devices are completely wireless and battery-powered — installation requires no electrical work or cabling. Sensors withstand Finnish winter conditions for outdoor use.

Customer Case: City of Helsinki

Kaltiot implemented an IoT monitoring solution for the City of Helsinki's outdoor fitness areas. The solution brought real-time usage data to city decision-makers and maintenance teams for the first time.
