Definitions of common IOT devices

If you’re researching IOT devices it’s important to know what different terms mean. The main types of connected devices for collecting data are beacons, tags, and sensors. Devices that transmit the collected data are called gateways, routers, or base stations.

What is an IoT beacon?

An IOT beacon is a small electronic device that broadcasts a signal. At its most basic, this signal is just a message telling the beacon’s unique ID, or name. The location of the beacon can be determined based on the location of the devices that pick up the beacon’s signal.

For example, a warehouse loading dock could have a gateway that “checks in” each pallet with a beacon attached as it passed through the loading dock.

IOT beacons are usually battery-operated. Beacons without sensors are commonly called tags.

What is an IoT tag?

A “tag” is another name for a small beacon that runs on battery power and is typically used for locating objects. Tags typically use low-power connectivity networks like Bluetooth Low Energy.

What is an IoT sensor?

An IOT sensor is a device that collects data, such as temperature, humidity, acceleration (impact), proximity, and more and forwards it to the cloud storage.

Sensor can refer to an individual sensor within the device, such as the relative humidity sensor, or to the multi-sensor device as a whole.

In practice all IOT sensors (data collectors) are also beacons (they send the data on to somewhere).

Some sensors have their own data connection using a network like LoRaWAN, LTE-M (external link) or WiFi.

What is an IoT gateway?

An IOT gateway picks up the signals from nearby IOT beacons and sends the data on to the central database. A typical gateway for BLE beacons can handle beacons within a 50-meter range.

Gateways are needed because small, affordable, battery-optimized beacons don’t have a direct connection to the internet. The gateway takes the Bluetooth Low-Energy signal from the beacon and sends the data over a wired or wireless internet connection to the cloud.

Kaltiot has developed a unique gateway for BLE devices that is also battery-powered! Typically, gateways need to be plugged in to grid power because they are quite energy-intensive.

What is an IoT base station?

“Base station” is a term that’s also used in cellular networks, GPS surveying, and other uses. In IOT, it’s sometimes used instead of the term “gateway.”

An IOT base station essentially communicates with nearby devices over a local network like Bluetooth and transmits the same messages to and from the cloud over a different network, like WiFi or a 4G mobile network.
