Indoor and outdoor positioning for assets and people

Kaltiot Smart Tracker enables you to track the location of shipments, movable physical assets and employees, both indoors and outdoors. Just stick our small IOT beacon to the asset or equipment you want to track and register it in our online IOT service.

BLE trackers can be used to track different size items from hand tools to shipping containers — whatever is critical to keeping your business running smoothly. Affordable pricing means even lower-value items can be tracked to save time.

Unlike barcodes, our beacons never require manual scanning. We also have connected LoRa and LTE-M IOT devices available which provide near real-time reporting from almost anywhere for outdoor tracking and global supply chain coverage.

Using the same beacons, you can also set up Kaltiot Smart Tracker environmental and usage monitoring for your business.

Kaltiot Smart Tracker can be used to track people, physical business assets, and cargo shipments. Our solution is suitable for workplace safety, site security, asset management, and logistics uses.

Tracking the location of employees and workers

Employee tracking can be used for safety purposes, to measure productive time, and to determine holdups in processes. Tracking can be implemented in a GDPR-compliant way. Learn more about EU and Finnish laws related to tracking employees.

For example, if a chemical leakage, fire or explosion happened at a large manufacturing facility, location tracking would enable the company to check if everyone got out and help rescuers quickly locate those employees and visitors who remained inside.

Company security personnel can also track the location of visitors at high-security facilities.

How it works

To track workers anonymously on-site
  1. Attach one beacon each to shared items like helmets that workers put on when they enter the facility. If you are going to track different groups of people, like facility visitors, management, and floor workers, keep beacons separate for the different groups. For example, facility visitor beacons could be attached to a “Visitor” nametag. Or you could use different color beacons provided by Kaltiot.
  2. (Optional) Create different asset groups in the Kaltiot online console for any groups of people you want to track.
    1. Factory example: Facility visitors, managers, and floor workers.
    2. Construction site example: Painters, electrical installers, flooring installers, window installers, project managers, etc.
  3. (Optional) Assign each beacon to a specific group in the console. You will need the unique beacon ID that each physical beacon is tagged with. You can also do this first, and sort the beacons into what group they will be used for.
  4. Install gateways at key points around the site. These are small, battery- or grid-powered devices provided by Kaltiot that detect the beacons’ signals and calculate their location.
  5. You’re ready to go! Start using the beacons.
To track specific individuals

Examples:

  • Industrial facility for safety reasons
  • Care home to track how much time each worker spends with each patient, and how much care time each patient receives total

Steps

  1. Attach one beacon to a personal, unique item like a name tag. Workers can also safely carry the beacons while off-site, because the beacon location will only be known when the worker is within range of a gateway for your company.
  2. Create an “object” for each person you want to track in the Kaltiot TorqHub. You can input the person’s name here and it will show in your maps. Then, “assign” the beacon to each person. Once you do so, the person’s location will show as the beacon’s location.
  3. Install gateways at key locations.
To track workers at any location, outside of a fixed facility

App option

  1. Have employees install the Kaltiot Smart Tracker application on their Android or IOS smartphone, or have us integrate the functionality into an existing internal company app
  2. No gateways are needed

The app consumes about 10% of phone battery life per day when it is in use.

Asset and equipment tracking

Proper asset tracking enables you to optimize the size of your asset pool, optimize where assets should be allocated based on usage, minimize equipment loss, and save time otherwise wasted searching for available equipment.

Equipment positioning using IoT also enables maintenance to be completed in a much more organized way and cut off a significant percentage of work days spent searching for the specific units needing maintenance.

At Kaltiot, we estimated that just by tracking hospital beds, you could have 10% less beds and save 200k€ a year in a medium sized hospital.

How it works

To track assets at one or more factories, worksites, or facilities
  1. Attach one beacon to each item to be tracked
  2. Create asset groups in the Kaltiot online console
    1. Hospital example: Beds, wheelchairs, portable heart monitors, etc
    2. Construction site example: Scissor lifts, hand carts, ladder, portable heating unit
  3. Create each item as an asset within the console. Assign the beacon to the asset using its unique ID.
  4. Install gateways at key points around the site(s). If you’re tracking assets that are moved between multiple sites, this would include the loading dock or shipping hall. The gateways are small, battery- or grid-powered devices provided by Kaltiot that detect the beacons’ signals and calculate their location.

You’re ready to go! Data will start loading into the reporting automatically.

  2. The app will report asset location data to the central database for an assets within range. Typically, this would be assets the employee has with them.

Cargo tracking and logistics

Smart Tracker can be used to follow the location of shipments within a company’s internal supply chain, and details about those shipments. Using more affordable beacons without a direct internet connection, a small beacon is attached to each shipment at the originating warehouse. The beacon registers location automatically at certain checkpoints, without needing to be scanned, tapped, or anything else.

The system can also be used for tracking shipments to customers or outside of a predetermined supply chain. This is possible with networked beacons that send a signal from almost anywhere in the world, without requiring checkpoints.

Beacons can also be set up to track temperature and humidity for cold-chain cargo, and impacts for fragile shipments.

Example of cargo tracking

How it works

To track shipments within a predefined supply chain
  1. Attach one Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacon to each item to be tracked
  2. Create each item as an asset within the console. Assign the beacon to the asset using its unique ID.
  3. Install gateways at key transit points, such as a loading dock or warehouse. The beacons will be registered as long as they pass within approximately 50 meters of the gateway.
  4. When the shipment is complete, remove the beacon from the shipment in the console. The beacon data will no longer be connected to the shipment or update its location.
  5. Collect the beacon and reuse it for the next shipment.

You’re ready to go! Data will start loading into the reporting automatically.
